Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is said to be recovering well after he underwent emergency surgery on Saturday to remove his appendix.

The Liverpool manager complained of feeling unwell when he was staying at the city's Hope Street hotel on Friday before the game with Sunderland and awoke on Saturday morning in a worse condition, which led to him being examined by club doctor Andy Massey.

He was taken by car to Aintree Hospital where the decision was made to operate on the German immediately. In his absence, the team was picked by his assistants Zelkjo Buvac and Peter Krawietz, who were aided by goalkeeper coach John Achterberg and Pepijn Lijnders, the development coach.

Klopp is expected to be discharged from hospital on Sunday but Liverpool are not giving any indications on when he will return to the touchline. Liverpool face West Ham in an FA Cup fourth round replay at Upton Park on Tuesday then Aston Villa at Villa Park next Sunday.
