Manchester United have confirmed that goalkeeper Victor Valdes has joined Belgian side Standard Liege on loan for the rest of the season.

The 34-year-old will remain with the Belgian club until the end of the season and then become a free agent. He has made just two appearances for the Red Devils since arriving from Barcelona a year ago.

Manager Louis van Gaal made the Spaniard available for transfer at the start of the season after he reportedly refused to play in a reserve game and was not given a squad number.

On Thursday, Valdes sent a farewell message to United’s fans, saying: “Thank you all for your support during these months of hard work for me. I will never forget! See you soon!”

Valdes won the Champions League three times with Barcelona and was in the Spain squad that won the World Cup and European Championship.
